Bangkok, Thailand Itinerary: 4 Perfect Days

This 4 days in Bangkok itinerary plans the old royal city, Chinatown, the markets and the canals day by day, with baht costs, the best months to visit Bangkok in Thailand, seasonal weather and a Google Maps link for every stop. Bangkok rewards planning by area rather than by ticking off sights: the Grand Palace and Wat Pho sit together by the river, Chinatown is a short boat ride away, and the shopping and museum district is on the Skytrain. Each day starts early to beat the heat, keeps the middle of the day indoors or on the water, and ends with street food or a rooftop.

Best time to visit

November to February is the cool, dry season — 25–32°C, low humidity and the best time for temple days, though it is also the busiest and priciest. March to May is very hot, often above 35°C. June to October brings heavy afternoon downpours that usually pass within an hour, plus lower hotel rates.

Getting around

The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro are fast, cheap and air-conditioned — buy a Rabbit card or tap a contactless card. The Chao Phraya Express Boat (orange flag) is the easiest way to reach the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and Chinatown. Grab is reliable and cheap for short hops; if you take a metered taxi insist on the meter, and treat tuk-tuks as a short novelty ride, agreed in advance.

The 4-day Bangkok, Thailand itinerary

Day 1

The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun by river

  1. Morning

    ฿500

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew

Arrive by 08:30 when the gates open — the courtyards are brutal by late morning. Cover shoulders and knees; sarongs are lent at the entrance but the queue is long. Ignore anyone outside telling you the palace is closed today.

    Grand Palace, Bangkok
  2. Afternoon

    ฿300 entry · ฿480 massage

Wat Pho and a Thai massage

Walk ten minutes south to the Reclining Buddha, then take a massage at the temple's own school — it is the birthplace of Thai massage and the most restorative hour of the trip.

    Wat Pho, Bangkok
  3. Evening

    ฿100 entry · dinner ฿300–฿700

Cross-river ferry to Wat Arun at sunset

The ฿5 ferry from Tha Tien lands beneath the Temple of Dawn. Climb the steep steps for the river view, then eat at a riverside spot in Tha Tien or Tha Maharaj with the palace lit up opposite.

    Wat Arun, Bangkok
Day 2

Chinatown, Yaowarat street food and the old town

  1. Morning

    ฿100

Wat Traimit and the Golden Buddha

Start at the five-and-a-half-tonne solid gold Buddha at the eastern gate of Chinatown, then wander the Sampeng Lane market alleys while they are still cool and loading up for the day.

    Wat Traimit, Bangkok
  2. Afternoon

    Free · museum ฿100

Flower market and the old town

Walk or take a short boat to Pak Khlong Talat, the 24-hour flower market, then cut through to the Museum Siam or the quiet lanes and shophouse cafés around Tha Tien and Phraeng Phuthon.

Pak Khlong Talat Flower Market, Bangkok
  3. Evening

    ฿300–฿700

    Yaowarat Road street food crawl

From about 18:00 the food stalls take over Yaowarat. Graze rather than sit down: grilled river prawns, oyster omelette, guay jub noodle soup and mango sticky rice, then a drink in a Soi Nana speakeasy nearby.

    Yaowarat Road, Bangkok
Day 3

Markets, Jim Thompson House and Siam

  1. Morning

Free entry · budget what you spend

    Chatuchak Weekend Market

If your trip covers a Saturday or Sunday, go early to Chatuchak — 15,000 stalls across 27 sections, best before 11:00. On a weekday, swap in the covered Or Tor Kor food market or Talad Noi's craft lanes instead.

    Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok
  2. Afternoon

    ฿200

    Jim Thompson House Museum

A cool, shaded teak compound built by the American who revived Thai silk, and one of the best hours indoors in the city. The guided tour takes about 45 minutes; the canal-side café is a good reset.

    Jim Thompson House Museum, Bangkok
  3. Evening

    Dinner ฿400–฿900 · drinks ฿350+

Siam malls and a rooftop drink

Ride the BTS one stop to Siam for the food halls at Siam Paragon or ICONSIAM across the river, then finish with a rooftop view — Vertigo at Banyan Tree or the cheaper Bangkok Heightz. Smart dress and no shorts.

    ICONSIAM, Bangkok
Day 4

Thonburi canals, Ayutthaya option and a last night market

  1. Morning

    ฿1,200–฿1,800 per boat

Longtail boat through the Thonburi khlongs

Hire a longtail at Tha Chang or Tha Tien for a 1–2 hour run through the canals: stilt houses, temple landings, the Royal Barges Museum and a slower, older Bangkok five minutes from the traffic.

    Khlong Bangkok Noi, Bangkok
  2. Afternoon

    Train ฿35–฿345 · park ฿50 per site

Ayutthaya day trip or Lumphini Park

With energy to spare, take the 80-minute train from Krung Thep Aphiwat to the ruined temples of Ayutthaya and hire a bike there. For a slower last day, walk Lumphini Park, watch the monitor lizards and visit the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

    Ayutthaya Historical Park, Ayutthaya
  3. Evening

    ฿250–฿600

    Jodd Fairs night market

End at Jodd Fairs at Rama 9 — leng saap pork rib soup, grilled seafood and dessert stalls under the office towers, busiest and best from 19:00. Take the MRT back rather than a taxi at closing time.

    Jodd Fairs Rama 9, Bangkok

Practical tips for Bangkok, Thailand

  • Temples enforce a dress code: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, no see-through fabric, shoes off inside the halls. Carry a light scarf.
  • Anyone on the street who says the Grand Palace is closed for a ceremony is running a gem or tailor scam — walk to the official gate and check yourself.
  • Start each day by 08:00 and treat 12:00–15:00 as indoor time; the heat is the biggest reason people cut days short.
  • Get a Rabbit card for the BTS and keep small notes for boats and street food — many stalls are cash only, though Thai QR pay is everywhere.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water only, but street food from busy stalls is safe and is the best eating in the city.
  • Traffic is worse than it looks on a map: if the trip crosses the city at rush hour, take the BTS, MRT or a river boat instead of a car.

Bangkok, Thailand itinerary questions

Is 4 days in Bangkok enough?
Yes. Four days covers the royal temples, Chinatown, the markets, the canals and a night market at a comfortable pace, with room for either a rooftop evening or a day trip to Ayutthaya.
What is the best month to visit Bangkok?
December and January are the coolest and driest, around 22–32°C. November and February are nearly as good with slightly fewer crowds. Avoid April if you dislike heat, unless you want Songkran.
How much does 4 days in Bangkok cost?
Budget roughly ฿2,500–฿5,500 per person per day for mid-range travel, so about ฿10,000–฿22,000 (US$280–$620) for four days excluding flights. Backpacker travel runs closer to ฿1,200 a day.
How do I get from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport into the city?
From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in 26 minutes for ฿45, or a metered taxi costs about ฿400 including the airport surcharge and tolls. From Don Mueang, the SRT Red Line or the A1 bus is cheapest; a Grab is around ฿300–฿450.
Is Ayutthaya worth a day trip from Bangkok?
Yes, if you like ruins and can handle another early start. The train takes about 80 minutes each way and the temple park is best covered by bicycle before noon.
Where should I stay for 4 days in Bangkok?
Riverside and Old Town put you next to the temples and the boats. Sukhumvit and Silom are on the BTS with the widest food and nightlife choice. Khao San is cheap and lively but noisy and far from the trains.
