Chicago, United States Itinerary: 5 Perfect Days

This 5 day Chicago itinerary plans the Loop, Museum Campus, the lakefront and the neighbourhoods day by day, with dollar costs, the best time of year to visit Chicago, Illinois and a Google Maps link for every stop. Five days lets you see the city the way locals actually move through it: downtown on foot, the lakefront by bike, and the neighbourhoods by 'L' train. Each day stays inside one or two areas so you spend your time in places rather than in transit, with room for deep dish, tavern-style pizza and an Italian beef along the way.

Best time to visit

Late May to early October gives you warm lakefront days, patio season and the big festivals. September is the sweet spot — mild, sunny and quieter than midsummer. December is festive around the Christkindlmarket, but January and February are genuinely cold and windy off the lake.

Getting around

A CTA Ventra day pass covers the 'L' trains and buses and is the fastest way between neighbourhoods; the Blue Line runs to O'Hare and the Orange Line to Midway. The Loop, River North and Museum Campus are all walkable, and Divvy bikes make the lakefront trail the nicest way to cover distance.

Practical tips for Chicago, United States

  • Buy a CTA Ventra 3-day or 7-day pass at any station machine — it pays for itself once you use the 'L' twice a day.
  • Book Skydeck, 360 Chicago and the architecture cruise online with a timed slot; walk-up queues can run over an hour in summer.
  • The Chicago CityPASS or Go City pass is worth it only if you visit three or more paid attractions — this plan sits right at that line.
  • Deep dish takes about 45 minutes to bake; call ahead or order it as soon as you sit down.
  • The lakefront is 10–15°F cooler and much windier than the Loop, so carry a layer even in July.
  • The Blue Line from O'Hare and the Orange Line from Midway both beat a rideshare in weekday traffic and cost a fraction as much.

Chicago, United States itinerary questions

Is 5 days enough for Chicago?
Five days is close to ideal. It covers the Loop, the architecture cruise, Museum Campus, two or three neighbourhoods and the lakefront without rushing, and still leaves an evening free for a show or a ball game.
What is the best time of year to visit Chicago?
Late May to early October for warm lakefront weather and festivals, with September the best balance of sunshine and smaller crowds. December is festive but cold; January and February are the harshest months.
How much does 5 days in Chicago cost?
Budget roughly $190–$340 per person per day for a mid-range trip — about $950–$1,700 for five days excluding flights. Hotel rates and the number of ticketed attractions move the total the most.
Do I need a car in Chicago?
No. The 'L', buses, Divvy bikes and walking cover everything in this itinerary, and downtown parking is expensive. Rent a car only if you plan a day trip outside the city.
Deep dish or tavern-style pizza?
Try both. Deep dish is the famous one, but thin, crispy tavern-style cut into squares is what most Chicagoans actually eat at home.
