Portugal Itinerary: 7 Perfect Days

This 7 day Portugal itinerary covers Lisbon, Sintra, Comporta and Évora day by day, with what each day costs in euros, the best months to travel, seasonal weather and a Google Maps link for every stop. Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Portugal: long enough to slow down, short enough to keep to one rental car and two bases. The plan spends four nights in Lisbon, adds the classic Sintra day trip, then heads south to Comporta and the Alentejo rice plains before returning for the last morning.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to mid-October bring warm, reliable days with fewer crowds than August. July and August are peak season — hottest, busiest and priciest — while November to March is mild, quiet and often better value.

Getting around

Lisbon itself needs no car: the metro, trams and the rechargeable Viva Viagem card cover almost everything. Rent a car for the Comporta and Évora days — the Alentejo coast has little public transport — and pick a hotel with parking or drop the car on return.

  2. Afternoon

    €6 viewpoint (free by stairs)

Walk the grid of the rebuilt Baixa district, ride or admire the iron Santa Justa lift, and finish with a coffee and a bica at Café A Brasileira in Chiado.

Elevador de Santa Justa, Lisbon, Portugal
  3. Evening

    €45–€85

    Fado dinner in Alfama

Book a small fado house in Alfama for dinner and guitar — the intimate rooms around Beco do Carrasco beat the big tourist shows.

Day 2

Belém and the riverfront

  1. Morning

  2. Afternoon

    Free walk · pastries €1.40

Pastéis de Belém and the river walk

Queue for the warm original pastéis de nata (€1.40 each), then stroll or cycle the riverside path past the Padrão dos Descobrimentos to the MAAT.

    Pastéis de Belém, Lisbon, Portugal
  3. Evening

Day 3

Sintra — palaces, woods and wells

  1. Morning

    €20 with park

    Pena Palace at opening time

Take the 8:30–9:00 train from Rossio and the 434 bus up the hill; a pre-booked timed ticket for Pena Palace means the terraces are calm before the crowds.

    Pena Palace, Sintra, Portugal
  2. Afternoon

    €12

    Quinta da Regaleira

Wander the initiation well, grottos and tunnels of the Regaleira estate — bring shoes you don't mind getting damp — and lunch in Sintra old town.

    Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Portugal
  3. Evening

    €20–€45

Back to Lisbon via Cascais or Time Out Market

Ride the coastal train back through Cascais for a seafront stroll, or head straight to the Time Out Market for a sampler dinner.

Day 4

Comporta and the Alentejo coast

  1. Morning

    Free (July–Aug parking ~€10)

Drive south and hit the beach

Pick up the rental car and drive the 1h15 to Comporta; the long, wild Praia da Comporta beach with its soft dunes and beach shacks is the reward.

    Praia da Comporta, Comporta, Portugal
  2. Afternoon

    Bike hire ~€15

Village, rice paddies and a slow cycle

    Comporta, Alcácer do Sal, Portugal
  3. Evening

    €40–€80

Barefoot dinner at a beach shack

Stay for sunset: Comporta's beach restaurants serve grilled fish and rice dishes at low tables in the sand — book ahead in summer.

Day 5

Évora, the Alentejo heartland

  1. Morning

    Templo Romano de Évora, Portugal
  2. Afternoon

    €5

Capela dos Ossos and cobbled lanes

Visit the famous bone chapel inside Igreja de São Francisco, then meander the quiet cobbled streets and pick up Azulejo tiles in the craft shops.

    Capela dos Ossos, Évora, Portugal
  3. Evening

    €30–€60

    Alentejo table

Évora is one of Portugal's best food towns — book a courtyard restaurant for black pork, açorda and a bottle of Alentejo red.

Day 6

Back to Lisbon — Oceanário and rooftops

  1. Morning

    Free

  2. Afternoon

    Oceanário de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal
  3. Evening

    €30–€60

Príncipe Real and a sunset miradouro

Dinner among the concept stores of Príncipe Real, then walk down to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara for the lit-up Baixa below.

Day 7

Tiles, flea markets and farewell

  1. Morning

    €8 (flea market free)

Feira da Ladra or the National Tile Museum

Tuesdays and Saturdays, the flea market by the pantheon is worth a browse; otherwise the National Tile Museum explains the azulejos you've seen all week.

    National Tile Museum, Lisbon, Portugal
  2. Afternoon

    Snacks ~€5

    One last pastel de nata

Compare nata houses — Manteigaria in Chiado against the Belém original — and pick up tinned sardines or cork goods as souvenirs.

    Manteigaria, Lisbon, Portugal
  3. Evening

    €8–€15

    Golden-hour goodbye

If your flight allows, end with a drink at a Graça rooftop watching the same view you opened the trip with — then head to the airport.

Practical tips for Portugal

  • Book Pena Palace and Jerónimos Monastery timed tickets online at least a few days ahead; both sell out in summer.
  • Buy a €0.50 Viva Viagem card at any Lisbon metro station and top it up — tram 28, the metro and the Santa Apolónia train all accept it.
  • Bread, olives and cheese placed on the table (couvert) are charged per person; wave them away if you don't want them.
  • Lisbon's calçada cobbles are slippery when wet and the hills are steep — pack good walking shoes and use the elevators and funiculars.
  • Rent the car only for the Comporta and Évora days; downtown Lisbon parking is scarce and the city is easily walkable or metro-able.
  • Dinner starts late in Portugal — most kitchens open around 19:30–20:00, and 21:00 reservations are normal.

Portugal itinerary questions

Is 7 days enough for Portugal?
Seven days comfortably covers Lisbon, Sintra, Comporta and Évora at a relaxed pace. To add Porto and the Douro Valley, extend by three or four days rather than rushing them in.
What is the best time of year for this itinerary?
April to June and September to mid-October offer the best mix of warm weather and manageable crowds. August works if you book Comporta beach dinners and Sintra tickets well ahead.
How much does a 7-day trip to Portugal cost?
Budget roughly €110–€210 per person per day for a mid-range trip — about €770–€1,470 for the week excluding flights. Accommodation and Comporta dinners move the total the most.
Do I need a car for this Portugal itinerary?
Not for Lisbon or the Sintra day trip — trains and transit cover both. Rent a car only for the Comporta and Évora days, when the Alentejo's limited public transport makes driving the easier choice.
