10 days · Volcano, cloud forest & Pacific coast

Costa Rica Itinerary: 10 Perfect Days

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Costa Rica: enough time for a volcano, a cloud forest and a stretch of Pacific coast without spending every morning in the car. This route runs San José → La Fortuna (Arenal) → Monteverde → Manuel Antonio → San José, with two to four nights in each base so you unpack less and hike more.

Best time to visit

The dry season from mid-December to April brings the most reliable sunshine, and it is also the busiest and priciest stretch. May, June and late November are green-season sweet spots: mornings are usually clear, rain arrives mid-afternoon, and prices drop noticeably. September and October are the wettest months on the Pacific side.

Getting around

A rental 4x4 gives the most freedom and makes this exact route easy; budget 3–5 hours between bases and avoid driving after dark on mountain roads. If you would rather not drive, private shuttles link all four bases daily, and the La Fortuna–Monteverde jeep-boat-jeep transfer across Lake Arenal is both faster and more scenic than the road.

The 10-day Costa Rica itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in San José and settle in

  1. Morning

    Car from $45/day

Land at Juan Santamaría and collect the car

Most long-haul flights land late morning. Pick up the rental (confirm the mandatory liability insurance in advance) and drive 25 minutes to a quiet base in Escazú or Alajuela rather than the city centre.

Juan Santamaría International Airport, Alajuela, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    Museum ~$13

    Central San José on foot

Ease into the trip with the Teatro Nacional, the Mercado Central for a first casado, and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum if you still have energy.

Teatro Nacional, San José, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $15–$30

First dinner and an early night

Eat close to your hotel, buy water and snacks for the drive north, and set an early alarm — tomorrow's road is best done in daylight.

Barrio Escalante, San José, Costa Rica
Day 2

Drive to La Fortuna and the Arenal hot springs

  1. Morning

    Fuel ~$25

    Scenic drive north via Sarchí

Allow about three hours to La Fortuna. Break the drive at Sarchí for the painted ox-carts, or at the Lake Arenal viewpoints on the western approach.

    Sarchí, Alajuela, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    $18

    La Fortuna Waterfall

Five hundred steps drop into a canyon with a swimmable pool below the falls. Go mid-afternoon when the tour buses have left and bring shoes with grip.

La Fortuna Waterfall, La Fortuna, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    Free–$85

    Thermal rivers below the volcano

Soak in the geothermally heated water at one of the resort springs, or free of charge in the river at El Chollín if you prefer the local option.

Tabacón Thermal Resort, La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Day 3

Arenal Volcano National Park and hanging bridges

  1. Morning

    $15 park fee

Lava trails in Arenal Volcano National Park

The Sendero Coladas crosses the 1992 lava flow to a viewpoint over the cone and Lake Arenal. Clouds gather by mid-morning, so start at opening.

Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    $29 (+$25 guide)

    Mistico Hanging Bridges

A three-kilometre loop of suspension bridges through the canopy. A guide roughly doubles what you spot — sloths, toucans, eyelash vipers.

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $18–$35

    Dinner with a volcano view

Grab a table on the east side of town where the cone is visible at dusk, and try a plate of chifrijo or casado con pescado.

    Downtown La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Day 4

Rio Celeste or a slow day in La Fortuna

  1. Morning

    $12 park fee

    Rio Celeste day trip

Two hours each way to Tenorio Volcano National Park, where two rivers meet and turn a startling turquoise. The trail is muddy year-round — rent boots at the gate.

Tenorio Volcano National Park, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    Free–$35

Lake Arenal viewpoints on the way back

Stop at the Arenal dam and the Nuevo Arenal bakeries; if you skipped Rio Celeste, swap in a chocolate or coffee farm tour instead.

    Lake Arenal, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $30

    Guided night walk

A two-hour guided walk in the reserve near town is the surest way to see red-eyed tree frogs, kinkajous and sleeping birds.

Arenal Night Walk, La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Day 5

Jeep-boat-jeep to Monteverde

  1. Morning

    $30–$40

    Cross Lake Arenal by boat

The jeep-boat-jeep transfer takes about three hours door to door versus four by road, with volcano views across the water. Rental cars can be shuttled around if you arrange it in advance.

Lake Arenal Boat Crossing, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    $18

Santa Elena and the cloud-forest edge

Check in, then walk the town's short reserve trails or the Bajo del Tigre path for an easy first taste of the cloud forest.

    Santa Elena, Monteverde, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $20–$35

    Warm dinner in the highlands

Monteverde sits at 1,400m and gets genuinely cold and windy after dark. Book somewhere with a fireplace and try the local cheese and coffee.

    Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Day 6

Monteverde Cloud Forest and the canopy

  1. Morning

    $25 (+$30 guide)

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve with a guide

Enter at 7am with a naturalist guide — the resplendent quetzal is most active early, and guides carry the scope you would otherwise need.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    $50–$90

Zip line or sky tram above the canopy

Monteverde is where canopy tours were invented. Choose the adrenaline version with a Superman cable, or the gentle aerial tram if heights are not your thing.

    Selvatura Park, Monteverde, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $35

Coffee, cacao and sugar cane tasting

A late-afternoon farm tour explains how the three crops are grown and processed on the same hillside, and ends with a tasting.

Don Juan Coffee Tour, Monteverde, Costa Rica
Day 7

Down to the Pacific and Manuel Antonio

  1. Morning

    Fuel ~$30

    Mountain road to the coast

Roughly four hours south-west. The first stretch out of Monteverde is unpaved and slow; after Sardinal the coastal highway is smooth.

Monteverde to Quepos road, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    Free

Tárcoles crocodile bridge and lunch in Jacó

Pull over at the Tárcoles bridge to look down on wild crocodiles, then eat lunch on the beach at Jacó or Playa Herradura.

    Tárcoles River Bridge, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $20–$40

    Sunset over Manuel Antonio

Check into the hillside road above the park and watch the sun drop into the Pacific from a terrace; keep food out of sight of the white-faced monkeys.

    Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Costa Rica
Day 8

Manuel Antonio National Park

  1. Morning

    $18 (+$25 guide)

    Guided walk in the park

Book online in advance — daily entry is capped. A guide with a scope finds the sloths, capuchins and squirrel monkeys most visitors walk straight past.

Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    Included

    Playa Manuel Antonio

The park's crescent beach has calm, warm water and shade at the tree line. Take everything with you when you swim; the monkeys are professionals.

    Playa Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $20–$40

    Seafood in Quepos

Drive down to the marina for grilled catch of the day and ceviche, usually cheaper than the restaurants on the park road.

Marina Pez Vela, Quepos, Costa Rica
Day 9

Mangroves, waterfalls or a beach day

  1. Morning

    $60

    Damas Island mangrove kayak

A quiet paddle through mangrove channels at high tide, with herons, crabs and often silky anteaters overhead.

Damas Island Mangroves, Quepos, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    Free–$40

    Nauyaca Waterfalls or Playa Biesanz

If you want one more big landscape, Nauyaca is 90 minutes south. For a slower day, Playa Biesanz is a sheltered cove ten minutes from Manuel Antonio.

Playa Biesanz, Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    $25–$45

    Last Pacific sunset

Time dinner for around 5.30pm so you are at a west-facing table when the light goes; sunset is quick this close to the equator.

    Manuel Antonio hillside, Costa Rica
Day 10

Return to San José and fly home

  1. Morning

    Fuel + tolls ~$25

Coastal drive back to the Central Valley

About three hours via the Costanera and Route 27. Leave a generous buffer — return the car at least three hours before your flight.

    Route 27, Costa Rica
  2. Afternoon

    $15–$35

Last stop for coffee and souvenirs

Break the drive at a Central Valley coffee finca in Atenas or Grecia — better beans and prices than the airport shops.

    Atenas, Alajuela, Costa Rica
  3. Evening

    —

    Depart from Juan Santamaría

Drop the car, allow time for the shuttle to the terminal, and keep $29 departure tax in mind — it is usually included in the ticket but worth checking.

Juan Santamaría International Airport, Costa Rica

Practical tips for Costa Rica

  • Book Manuel Antonio National Park entry online in advance; daily visitor numbers are capped and walk-up tickets are not sold at the gate.
  • Rental car quotes online rarely include the mandatory liability insurance — expect the real price to be roughly double the headline rate.
  • Do not drive mountain roads after dark: they are unlit, unfenced and often single lane around blind bends.
  • US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but paying in colones usually gets you a better rate; carry small notes for park fees and sodas.
  • Hike in the early morning. Wildlife is active, the trails are cooler, and in green season the rain almost always arrives after 1pm.

Costa Rica itinerary questions

Is 10 days enough for Costa Rica?
Yes — ten days comfortably covers one volcano region, one cloud forest and one coast with three or four bases. It is not enough to add the Caribbean side, Osa Peninsula or Guanacaste without spending most days driving.
What is the best 10-day Costa Rica route for a first trip?
San José → La Fortuna (Arenal) → Monteverde → Manuel Antonio → San José. Each hop is three to four hours, the landscapes change completely at every stop, and you end close to the airport.
How much does a 10-day trip to Costa Rica cost?
Budget roughly $130–$240 per person per day for a mid-range trip with a shared rental car, so about $1,300–$2,400 per person for ten days excluding international flights.
Do I need a 4x4 in Costa Rica?
For this route a 4x4 is strongly recommended, mainly for the unpaved roads around Monteverde. A standard car can manage the main highways but will struggle on the mountain sections, especially in the rainy season.
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?
Mid-December to April is driest and busiest. May, June and late November offer clear mornings, lower prices and greener landscapes, with rain typically arriving in the afternoon.
