Venice, Italy Itinerary: 3 Perfect Days

This 3 day itinerary for Venice covers San Marco, Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and the lagoon islands day by day, with euro costs, the best months to visit Venice in Italy, seasonal weather and a Google Maps link for every stop. Venice is small enough to cross on foot in an hour, but getting lost in it is half the point. Each day stays in one part of the city: San Marco and the Doge's Palace first, then the quieter Dorsoduro and Cannaregio sestieri, and finally a lagoon day on Murano and Burano.

Gondolas on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy at golden hour with the domes of Santa Maria della Salute and pastel palazzi reflected in the water

Best time to visit

April to early June and late September to October bring mild days and thinner crowds. July and August are hot, humid and packed. November to January is quiet and atmospheric but brings acqua alta, when raised walkways appear across St Mark's Square.

Getting around

Walk everywhere you can — most distances are shorter than they look. Vaporetto waterbuses cover the Grand Canal and the islands; a 24, 48 or 72-hour travel pass is far cheaper than single tickets. Traghetto gondola ferries cross the Grand Canal for a couple of euros. There are no cars on the islands, so pack light and expect bridges with steps.

Practical tips for Venice, Italy

  • Book St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace online with timed entry — walk-up queues can swallow an hour.
  • Venice charges a day-visitor access fee on selected peak days; overnight guests are exempt but pay a tourist tax through the hotel.
  • A 48 or 72-hour vaporetto pass pays for itself quickly, especially on the islands day.
  • Coffee and drinks cost far less standing at the bar than seated at a table, particularly on St Mark's Square.
  • Check the tide forecast between October and January — acqua alta usually lasts a couple of hours and raised walkways are set up.
  • Wear shoes you can climb bridge steps in; wheeled luggage is hard work here.

Venice, Italy itinerary questions

Is 3 days in Venice enough?
Yes. Three days covers St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, the Accademia and Dorsoduro's museums, the quieter Cannaregio lanes and a full day on Murano, Burano and Torcello without rushing.
How much does a 3 day Venice trip cost?
Budget roughly €150–€270 per person per day for a mid-range trip — about €450–€810 for three days excluding flights. Accommodation is the biggest variable, and staying in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro costs less than San Marco.
What is the best time to visit Venice?
April to early June and late September to October give mild weather and manageable crowds. Avoid August for heat and July–August for peak numbers; February brings Carnival and higher prices.
Is a gondola ride worth it?
A standard 30-minute ride costs around €90 for up to five people (more after 19:00), so it works out best shared. For a taste of the same experience for a couple of euros, take a traghetto across the Grand Canal.
How do I get from the airport into Venice?
From Marco Polo, the Alilaguna waterbus reaches San Marco in about 75 minutes for roughly €15, or the ATVO bus reaches Piazzale Roma in 20 minutes for about €10. A private water taxi is far faster and costs around €120.
Where should I stay for 3 days in Venice?
San Marco is the most central and the most expensive. Dorsoduro is quieter with good restaurants, and Cannaregio offers the best value while still being a 15-minute walk from the Rialto.
