Washington, D.C., United States Itinerary: 3 Perfect Days

Washington is the rare capital where most of the headline attractions are free, so the real constraint is walking distance. This plan splits the National Mall across two mornings and saves the neighbourhoods for the evenings.

Best time to visit

Late March to April for the cherry blossoms, and September to October for warm days without summer humidity. July and August are hot, humid and busy.

Getting around

Metro covers the city well and reaches Arlington and both airports; the Mall itself is a two-mile walk end to end, so plan a Metro or bus hop between the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial ends.
